Land crab

Land crab(C. carnifex)

Crustacea | Ocypodidae
Cardisoma carnifex

Characteristics

The land crab has a rounded square carapace that is 7-8 cm wide and is light brown mixed with purple-red. The margin of its frontal region is straight and wider than the length of its eye sockets. The chelae are uneven in size and the claw is rough and thick on the palm. The pereopods are thin, long, and slightly flat. The land crab is distributed in lands that are not submerged by the tide. These crabs move slowly and mostly feed on rotting leaves and grass.

Distribution

The brown land crab can be seen on the croplands and wastelands beside Gaomei Wetlands.
